What is a liposome?

A liposome is a lipid (fat) vesicle used to house and protect delicate compounds, botanicals and nutraceuticals. The ideal composition of a quality liposome utilizes high-grade phosphatidylcholine (PC), generally derived from either sunflower or soy lecithin. PC is the main structural support of the body’s cell membranes, which makes for a more flexible nanoparticle membrane that is easily recognized by the body to improve delivery via intraoral absorption.

Pharmacy-On-A-Chip: Microfluid Synthesis Of Pegylated & Folate Receptor-Targeted Liposomes For Drug Delivery

Nanoparticle delivery has been well-tested and proven. In this independent study from the National Institute of Standards and Technology we see that cellular uptake markedly increases as liposome size decreases. There is a rapid and dramatic almost 9-fold increase in absorption going from 236nm to just 97nm. At the smallest size, 64 nm, we can see that uptake is about 34 times higher, compared to the larger particle size. You can see that the uptake increases significantly once the size falls below 100 nanometers.
