Understanding the Body’s Detoxification Processes

THE PHASES OF DETOX

The process of detoxification consists of three phases. In a healthy state, toxins are processed and removed from the cells and organs using enzymes and transporter proteins, leaving the body primarily through the kidneys, liver, and GI tract, although the lungs and skin are also important detoxification organs.

Phase I – Activate

Phase I takes place mostly in the liver however it can also occur in the brain, intestines, lungs, and kidneys. In this phase, lipid-soluble toxins are activated by special enzymes like CYP450 and then temporarily transformed into intermediate substances making them more reactive.

Phase II – Conjugate

Phase II takes this intermediate, reactive toxin and conjugates or links it to a molecule like glutathione via enzymatic reactions. This phase makes the toxin water-soluble and safe for transport out of the cell and through the body.

Phase III – Filtrate and Excretion

Healthy bile flow supports the movement of conjugated toxins through the liver and kidneys for excretion. This phase helps prevent recirculation of toxins.
